Seven Suns our ‘ecological footprint’
The phrase "ecological footprint" is a metaphor used to depict
the amount of land and water area a human population would hypothetically need to provide the
resources required to support itself and to absorb its
wastes, given prevailing technology. The term was first coined in 1992 by Canadian
ecologist and professor at the University of British Columbia, William
Rees.
Footprinting is now widely used around the globe as an indicator of
environmental sustainability. It can be used to measure and manage
the use of resources throughout the economy. It is commonly used to explore the
sustainability of individual lifestyles, goods and services, organisations,
industry sectors, neighborhoods, cities, regions and nations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecological_footprint
In January this year we put on our thinking caps to help become more
einvironmentally friendly and we have made some changes to the way we do
things.
In our kitchen and restaurant we have several bins and we separate out
our scraps and waste. Food scraps are collected and given to local farmers to
feed their pigs, paper is used and re-used and then collected to recycle,
plastic bottles are bagged separately for recycling and all glass beer bottles
and coke bottles are recycled. We recycle anything we can and only throw out
what we must.
How does this affect you as a guest? Well, in order to reduce water
consumption and the effects of detergents discharged as grey water into the environment,
we only change your sheets if you are here for a long stay every 3 days. Towels
are changed every 2nd day (unless you request a more frequent change
schedule!)
We also ask you to leave the plastic bottles from your complimentary
water, or other bottles or cans from the minibar, for our staff to remove when
cleaning and they will put in our general recycling. All items to throw away go
into the bins and when we clean your room each day we will discard this in our
general rubbish.
Thanks from Seven Suns for your participation in our program.
